"Your projects have escaped, Director Morose."
"Most of my projects have escaped, Doctor Meldwing. That's why we built the wall. That's why we fortified the lab. H*ll, that's why we built on an island in the first place."
"I'm referring to your special projects... the ones you keep in the basement."
"WHAT? Which ones?"
"Projects SR388 and LV426."
"The Prymorgs? And the Maroids? Wasn't someone keeping an eye on them? What's happened to security around here?"
"Well, sir, I hate to point this out... but 20% of your security quit when they found out what you do here. Another 15% were clawed, gored, and eaten by your escaped experiments. You used another 10% as substitute test subjects when some of your original subjects contracted rabies. Another 13% contracted rabies from those same original subjects. Shall I go on?"
"Point taken. But the LV's and the SR's? Those should have been contained by the electric fields. We have motion sensors down there. We have-"
"-You created creatures designed for war and espionage, Director. Creatures designed with exactly the sort of skills it would take to escape from captivity. You combined humanoid intelligence and opposable thumbs... with animal strength, dexterity, senses, instinct... and finally threw in cybernetic technology. You created what in your eyes would be the perfect creatures, and then you gave them electronic weapons and sensors and gizmos and gadgets and-"
"I GET your point, Doctor. Irony is not lost on me."
"...and that's just the Prymorgs. The Maroids are even more dangerous. What makes you think you can imbed weapons on a shapeshifter, and still contain it? Even worse is the fact that most of these monsters are half-mad. But sanity wasn't your chief concern, was it, Director?"
"What about the Vysiyne contingency?"
"Um... actually, Director, that turned out not to be one of your better ideas. Making them dependent on the chemical vysiyne just made matters worse. We tried to tell you, but vysiyne isn't as rare as you think. In fact, the chemical is found in the eyeballs of most animals."
"So you're telling we have a pack of wild cyborgs running around the island, hungry for eyeballs?"
"No... not on the island. It turns out they're excellent swimmers, Director."
"...."
"Director? What do you want us to do?"
"...."
"Director?"
"....The project is finished. Clean out the basement. Destroy all the evidence. If anyone asks, we'll deny everything."
"Right away, Director."
"And Meldwing..."
"Yes, sir?"
"This conversation never happened."
