As a player who has been around for a while, I am always amazed when I discover something new (to me anyways) in the mod. For instance, I found a new store yesterday. It had some interesting items in it, a couple of which I may end up using for the character that found it. Also, a comment I remember reading during a search of the forums for something, lead me to discover a new approach to travel, allowing teleporting to a place I did not think possible.
Which brings me back to the topic. Credits, in the large amounts required to purchase the better items, for the higher level characters (20+) are very difficult/nearly impossible to gather.
There are only about 3 ways that are available to the average character. All three require a large quantity of time (hours of game play) to gain the credits needed (for items that costs from 100K to over 17Mil). All three also restrict the player to the area, repeatedly exploring the same territory. Depending on the character, the gold value gained also varies widely, for the same period of time spent gathering the loot. I have used these methods and still use them.
Most players do not have the hours required for these methods. I do not always. So they end up having to make a choice. RP or gather loot to be able to survive the many and diverse areas. Some get frustrated at not being able to afford the one thing that will help them past an area and on to the next. While I am willing to help (and be helped) to a degree, I also prefer to earn my way. It should be reasonably possible.
I recently discover a fourth way to gain credits. It was a long process to get to the point where it could be used. But it took a lot less time to get similar amounts of gold than the hours that would have been required. The time I saved I used in RP with my fellow players. I used this option only when there was no one else on the server to RP with.
Through a quirk of fate, I was informed that my new method was, essentially, an exploit. I suggested, and was using a method of self-control, but that was deemed not acceptable.
I was given an alternative to the three longer methods and my new one. Bosses could be beaten repeatedly. Not only is this very similar to what I was already doing, only two come to mind that could in a small way provide similar benefits, and still be accessible by the average character, And yet they would still take hours of repeated carnage to amass the credits. And again, I have used this method also.
Granted, there are a couple of very difficult bosses that can provide, assuming you have the correct character class(es) and know exactly what to do and how to do it. Not a reality for the average character.
My new method also is about the only use for the quest (other than the proving of the abilities of the character to work through the quest) involving it. I have completed the quest and found at the end...nothing. No reward, no new store, no recognition, nothing. Using it the way I was at least gave it move value.
So now it is back to the long hours of seeing the same scenery over and over again, just to get that one item so you can maybe improve your character, or try out that nifty thing that is cool, but will just sit in your inventory most of the time, until just the right moment.
Perhaps more options are needed.
