Joseff Card was the last of a long line of psychic fortune tellers in his tiny village. He was just as good as any of his ancestors; but constantly strove to be better. In the tribal skirmishes, he would come along and push his predictions to their maximum; often winning the field for the tribe's glory. He was a hero among his people.
And, as fitting a hero, was given his choice of wives within the tribe. He looked into the future, and saw that his wife was to die a gory death while he was away. He chose the mighty she-warrior Ellestra; believing his wife's death would be stopped by her reknowned combat prowess.
For ten years, they were happily married. They had a.. problem... conceiving a child, however. They travelled far and away; to the 'civilized' city of Trasa in order to seek aid. They found fertility drugs, and paying a very unfair ransom in gold units, set back off to their village (with a couple of new guns to be shared amongst the village, of coruse).
The drugs were a success, and they relished in their upcoming parenthood. Both were extremely cautious about Joseff's visions, and so avoided any fights for the next nine months.
One morning, however, Joe woke up with a vision of unfathomable sadness. He suspected that it had something to do with a good friend of his, and so accompanied him on their hunting trip.
That same day, Ellestra began to give birth. The trip to Trasa had, unfortunately, exposed her to radiation - while she was in the very early stages of pregnancy. Her daughter was a mutant, something the village had absolutely no experience with. Joseff's visions came true, as a pair of horns upon the daughter's head ripped up her vulnerable sections, and she bled to death. The child had survived, but looked sickly and weak, clumsy and stupid. The tribe mourned the death of their great Warrioress, and did not celebrate the birth of the new child.
Joseff was horrified about what had happened, knowing his visions were self-fulfilling prophecies. He sank into a rapidly declining depression, doting extraordinairely upon his daughter. When she reached the age of 12, he was a pathetic excuse of a man, incapable of doing anything but lamenting his long lost wife. The tribe blamed Essef (named for her father and her mother) for murdering her mother and destroying the mind of her father. The tribe decided it was best to kill her now, before she spread her taint.
When they came to collect her at dawn, Joseff guarded her with a renewed purpose in life. The tribe tried to subdue him, and eventually managed to overwhelm the poor man by pure pure force of numbers. As they wrested his last link to a better life away from his arms, he let out a wailing sob and died on the spot.
Essef was taken to a pit which was usually used to hold prisoners from other tribes of savages. A small squad of men aimed their precious guns at her, fired...
And missed. It was now when her mutant powers flared. A flash of light surprised them; and sudden bursts of speed allowed her to easily dodge each and every bullet. They tried again; this time unsurprised by her steady glow, but she still was simply too fast for them. They tried once again; and gave up.
Joseff's psychic powers had joined with Ellestra's combat prowess to give her an almost savantal knowledge of fights. They allowed her to stay with the tribe; grudgingly. But every one shunned her. She always got the worst scraps of gristle from a hunt; she was never given a weapon to wade into battle with. Eventually, she grew sick of her tribe's obvious mutant-racism. She decided to leave, and left for the city she had heard her father speak of in hushed tones of awe: Trasa.
(Because of her spoiled childhood and tribal society, she is a greedy person with a poor concept of 'property.' On the flip side; her years of oppression leave her with an immutable sympathy for the downtrodden, and she will defend them with any breath she can draw.)
