and as a correction, the alternate 3.5 system is Pathfinder by Paizo. and as to 4th ed, its like sitting in a room where every one arround the table is a Mr Smith from the matrix and only way to tell class is to examine thier ties...

There is a new host for Itropa and they are looking for willing DM's and trying to build a player base. itropanewgen.forumotion.com/ and given my flakey work schedule of long hours and some times 7 days a week working, i'll probably be limitted to odd mischief and comic relief... On the up side, I finally have a computer that isnt challenged to run NWN at full settings, and is actually sighing and yawning waiting for some thing to challenge its abilities lol... And no, I'm not hosting...

I've been playing on Itropa Newgen, and it's been good to see Itropa up and running again. Right now, it seems like they're testing out things, but the hoster's pretty pumped.

I'll try to drop by the 'new' server when I get the chance It's nice to have a sci-fi based server that doesn't get upset if you miss a Star Wars reference that wasn't in any of the movies...

Just a few quick updates; our 4e campaign has come to an end, and I'm currently playing in a Pathfinder group. I've been in two sessions so far. Some elements are better than 4e, some are worse, IMO. I definitely don't miss fights taking two hours, but in some ways it feels like a step backward to me. Anyone who wants to follow our progress can read more here. A couple of months ago, I ran a D&D 4e session loosely based on Itropa. The session recap is here. Unfortunately we ran short on time and never finished it. Information about the campaign setting is here. I also went ahead and posted the entire module here, in case anyone wants ideas for their own group. I wrote it for 4e, but it could easily be converted to any system.

4th edition never sat well with me, and while Pathfinder is based on a restructured 3rd(3.5) edition, it is still taking some getting use to as thier xp system went back to 1st ed and basic set in how it works. Where 3rd ed had a set xp progression for lvl and encounter xp scaled to party lvl, Pathfinder sets the xp for encounters and the individual character lvl progression is on a non-linear curve, much like the original (Red Box) Basic Set or 1st Ed AD&D was, with the exception that all classes use the same xp progression rather than thier own class charts.

I doubt the XP curve is going to be an issue; I have a feeling our DM is pretty much just going to tell us when he feels it's time for us to level up, rather than handing out XP after each session.
He always starts out a campaign wanting to be anal about every little detail, then a few sessions in he realizes he just doesn't have that much free time, and starts getting lazy. He's a great DM, don't get me wrong. I've played under him for several campaigns (mostly 4e, but also some one-shots using other systems), and he's always been able to make sessions fun regardless of the system. It's just sometimes he bites off more than he can chew.
So I doubt he's going to go to the trouble of figuring up the XP for each encounter, preferring instead to level us when it feels right.

LOL!! I didnt mean the XP was a problem, I was just pointing out how Pathfinder went. I started out playing 1st ed AD&D and the "Red Box" Basic Set games. Actually, I was a bit dissapointed in the re-release of the Red Box for 4th ed as I found nothing in common with the original. I had expected a revamp of the old solo adventure tutorials and maybe some updated story, but I found no connection with the original other than the cover art

Yeah, the Red Box was just a shout-out to past editions. Essentials in general is 4e's attempt to compromise between 4e and 3.5. Having played a several Essentials characters at this point, I can see how it feels like you're playing a 3.5 character in a 4e game. So using the older cover art was part of that; they just wanted people to know they were throwing in some elements from past editions... but you're right, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense historically speaking.

Hmmm, I do not recall a 3.0 or 3.5 "Red Box" being produced. What I was recalling was the original "Red Box" from 1977-78, Basic Set Edition, reprinted/re-released in 80's and 90's until WotC bought out TSR (Totally Silly Rules - old joke of my friends). Speaking of old "Red Box" adventures, there is a mod up on either PW Action or PW Story that incorporated the original 3 basic set adventures, updated a little in NWN style. Vagabond some thing in name of server.

Hmmm, I do not recall a 3.0 or 3.5 "Red Box" being produced. Exactly; which is why I said it didn't make historical sense. WOTC was reminiscing about the same 1977 edition you were. The fact that Essentials itself has more to do with 3.5 (IMO) is weird, yes, but I guess it was a generic way of saying, "This is more like past editions than the normal 4e line." The Vagabond thing sounds neat, I might check it out; though I hardly find time for computer games any more since I started PnP. Also speaking of old editions (sort of), a couple of months ago we tried a session of " Dungeon Crawl Classics". It was a very interesting session; we started at level 0, playing 3 characters each because the session was so deadly for such non-heroic characters. I blogged about the session here. It was interesting, but it's not for me. I spend 6 days a week as a commoner; I want to spend that 7th day pretending to be something heroic. I guess I'm just not that hardcore.

Well, I'm on my way to Dragon*Con. Unfortunately I won't be able to do any gaming while I'm there, but I do love walking around and seeing all the people in costume. Those of you who are friends with me on Facebook will be seeing lots of pictures soon. Btw, if anyone's still interested in the edition wars discussion, I posted a blog regarding some of my thoughts about Pathfinder and D&D 4e, based on what I've played of Pathfinder so far: D&D 4e vs PathfinderBut keep in mind I am not an old school or hardcore player, so most of the things I hate are stuff y'all love, and vice versa.

*sigh* wish I could go to a convention again, last one I had time for was Anime Expo 2005. Save for this year, my vacation has usually been bumped due to a loaded show schedule. This year, was so over worked, I came down sick for a week. Hope you enjoy the Convention.
